just noticed the item about maura's taking part in the Women's Heart tour in Ireland. My mother's mom was born in the Castlebar area, seeing her there would be a blast but alas not in the plans.

Anyway, I noticed Eleanor McEvoy is one of the performers--she is great in my book, I have a few of her albums and she performed live at Tramps in NYC a few years ago and I got to see her, it was great! She grew up trained as a clasical musician and switched over to popular music much later. I think she should have some hit records, her writing is very good.

Has Maura ever covered an eleanor McEvoy song??

Maura has not recorded any of Eleanor's song (at least that I'm aware of.)

They are friends, though, from the first Woman's Heart tour. Eleanor wrote the title song way back when, and the thing is still going.

Castlebar is a great town. Too bad we can't get the record company to promote a "free trip to Ireland" contest.

Got the New Annie Lennox CD...Afer a few listens, I am really enjoying it....It is a great CD..

Also, I also finally bought the Gerry O'Bierne Cd that is in the Maura Store. I would reccomend that one as well. He is a talented story teller.

I recently purchased a CD by Damien Rice. I think he is an Irish artist. It is kind of an acoutic album called "O." It is really good. He seems really talented. It is another album that I am really enjoying..

Hope all is well.

I agree withyou about that Damien Rice album, interesting run-off at the end.
Fave track - The Blowers Daughter.

Here's a new artist to look out for. I don't know how many of you have heard of Terry Wogan. (For those who haven't - He's a charmming gent from the Emerald Isle who presents the UK's favourite Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2). Anyway, he's just introduced a singer called Katie Melua. I've only heard two songs so far and I think her debut album is due for release in October. One of the songs I've heard (only once) is called The Closest Thing To Crazy, it's really good.
There's a sample on the intro page of her website.

Hi
(Time of message just after 10pm UK time 21-August 2003)

This is only valid for about 8 hours or so, BUT...

If you go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2

Click on the link for TERRY WOGAN

then Click on the LISTEN AGAIN button under his picture...another window will pop up

Click the play button and 'skip 5 minutes' play a bit more 'skip again and allow to play again' ...until you get to a point where you are about 1 hour 10 mins into the show.

There you will find Katie Melua's Closest Thing To Crazy

It's worth the effort , honestly

By the time you've read through this message you could well have missed it.

(Thanks mac ! )

Well, I DID get a chance to listens to the snipet of the song at Katie's website. It definitely has promise. It sounds very good.

I am enjoying the Damien Rice album. Yes the ending is a bit unusual....

On another note.
Did anyone else see the movie, "The Magdalene Sister?" I just saw it on Thursday. It was very intense. It was VERY good, but intense. It is amazing that those kinds of places existed in Ireland until 1996. Wow...

Mike
