Maura sang in Madisonville KY last night, about an hour and a half drive for me and my wife. It had been a while since I'd had a chance to see her perform and it was a real treat. I missed the Belcourt last week over a last minute business trip, so I was pumped up and not about to miss this one.
I couldn't begin to recall the entire playlist, but she did two long sets and a wide variety from most of her albums. Don Johnson on bass (does that thing have five strings? I'm not a bass player, but isn't that unusual?). John Mock on guitar was outstanding. For a while I thought Maura was going to forget to introduce John, but she finally gave him a very nice intro. He really is phenomenal.
Maura was in excellent voice, and brave enough for an a cappella encore after singing for over 2 hours. I don't know how her voice holds up that long.
Maura, if you are reading, I was the guy in the front row to your left with the grayish beard. The one with a smile on his face and a tear in his eye.
Thanks for a sharing your gift with the world.
